To put it simply, music moves people. This blog is a collection of songs to move to, in some fashion or another. Whether it's physical - running, dancing, driving or what have you - or mental, music plays a tremendous role in many peoples' day to day lives. Some of these songs you'll probably have heard. Others will be completely new to you. Others still may be rediscoveries. My hope is to bring you a song each day that is not only enjoyable to listen to, but may also make your day just a little better.

RJD2 - A Beautiful Mine (Instrumental) [Instrumental Hip-Hop]
I sort of hinted yesterday at what might be coming for today’s post. The Emmys have just concluded, and they were quite entertaining. For the second year running, AMC’s Mad Men won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. For the last falls, Mad Men has, with few exceptions, been my Sunday night escape, since I don’t have Showtime to watch Dexter as it airs. I gushed enough about the show yesterday, though, so on with the song.
Today, I’m playing the full version of RJD2’s “A Beautiful Mine”, which serves, albeit in a very abbreviated form, as Mad Men’s opening theme. This is one of the last instrumental works that RJD2 released before going all crazy and trying to sing and play real instruments (hint: it’s not working, dude). Enjoy. And watch Mad Men.
The Decemberists - The Infanta [Folk Rock]
The Decemberists are a fun band, distinct and unique from most everything else in music these days. The are a blast to see live. Colin Meloy and company are as apt to write a shanty as they are to write a prog rock epic, and their diversity at all levels — album to album, song to song, and even from one section of a song to another — is both refreshing and impressive, as it all feels genuine.
Similarly refreshing is AMC’s excellent television drama Mad Men, which focuses on the employees of Sterling Cooper, an advertising firm on Madison Avenue, in the 1960s. It is brilliantly written, acted, and directed, and has won numerous awards. Among those awards are several Primetime Emmys, the latest iteration of which will be handed out tomorrow night. Mad Men’s second season stands to rake them in by the armload.
Now you ask “What do these things have to do with each other?” The answer is that “The Infanta” appeared in the season two episode “Maidenform”, in the first scene. It played, in a slightly accelerated form, as Betty Draper dressed herself for her weekly trip to the equestrian club. The combination of music and imagery was near perfect. It was at the time, and remains now, the only piece of licensed music used in the show that isn’t a period piece. Great song by one of my favorite bands, great scene in one of my favorite shows. If you’re not into one or the other or both, I highly recommend you fix that.
